As a member of the Varsity Board of Directors, Mark is responsible for the appointment and joint oversight of the company’s President & CEO and contributing to the company’s strategic direction.
Mark served as the company’s president/CEO from 2006-2010. Mark’s leadership steered the company through the economic impact of the 2008/2009 recession. He reduced overhead, lowered cost and championed standardization throughout the company setting directives for the development of Varsity’s branded JanOPS Operating System and its Janitorial Bank Operating System. He also supported and set directives for improving Varsity’s credibility through ISSA CIMS certification both for quality and for green building services. Under Mark’s leadership, Varsity grew significantly through national accounts with CB Richard Ellis.
Mark has been a leader in the industry. He is a member of BSCAI, having served on various committees and accepting numerous speaking assignments over the years. He is a BSCAI Certified Building Service Executive, and he co-authored the book, “Cleaning-up for a Living” – an industry-wide acclaimed field book for owning and operating a janitorial company.
Mark started with Varsity as a painter in 1965, as a freshman at Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID. He has managed maintenance and construction operations for the company, as well as janitorial and grounds services. Mark has served as Area Manager, District Manager, Regional Manager, Regional Vice-president and as President & CEO. Mark relocated his family 10 times while building the company in various parts of the country.
Mark has a degree in Geology from Idaho State University and his executive MBA certificate from Boise State University.
Most important to Mark are his family and church service. He also enjoys building/remodeling, woodworking, fly fishing and gardening. Mark and Jerry Lee have six children and eleven grandchildren, all of whom are learning to clean!
